I have always looked up to current players Greeny and Ike. However Jon Phipps would be the best player and captain that I’ve played alongside. He always lead by example and was motivating in the things he said.

JARRAD SMITH
1. When and why did you join SPRL?
I joined SPRL in 2015 following their 2014 Premiership win after a small stint in Newcastle NSW. Coach Justin Nixon phoned me shortly after I came home to Perth and I haven’t looked back since. The calibre of players in the 2014 squad made it a very easy decision to go to the lions.
2. What is your fondest memory of your first SPRL game?
I came off the bench in round 1, 2015 in an away game against Joondalup. We won 34-12 and I specifically remember the fast pace of the game. It felt extra special because of how much a player making a club debut means to South Perth. I just wanted to do my job without making an error and thankfully I achieved that. The celebrations in the sheds were hard to forget too.
3. Do you have any pre-game rituals/routines?
I don’t have any specific rituals, however I make sure I get active in the mornings by going for a walk along the beach or passing the football around. I also make sure that I eat the same foods at the same time to make sure I am fueled by kick off.
4. Who is the most annoying team mate?
That’s easy. It’s Mason Hiko – he doesnt stop talking, usually about himself.
5. What is your favourite post game food?
Anything with carbs. Although I am fond of a burger with Tyler Thomas and Mason Hiko on occasion.
6. What is your best memory in an SPRL jersey?
There have been many, playing at Dorrien Gardens with the Lions is a great experience for me and there’s nothing better and a massive win over a rival. I have been lucky enough to play in milestone games for Isaac Thomas, Daniel Green, Harry Debique and Eddie Proudler. The team hit an extra gear when those games come around.
7. If you weren’t playing Rugby League, what sport would you be playing?
I’d probably be playing Touch Rugby. It’s the closest sport to Rugby League that isn’t Rugby League.
8. Favourite song?
I am a massive country music fan. Anything from Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs or Zach Bryan. Dangerous by Morgan Wallen has been on replay lately.
9. Any hidden talents?
I do have a skill in keeping Mason Hiko quiet longer than 5 minutes.
10. What is a fun fact about you?
I actually played Aussie Rules for a little while as a junior – I wasn’t any good though.
11. Who is your favourite SPRL player or legend? Why?
Whilst I know he’s my mate, Eddie Proudler has been the benchmark for me since I came to the Lions. His calm nature and direct style of play is very hard to defend against and he lets his actions do the talking. I do wish he would improve on his Racing tips though, they’re not the greatest at the moment.
